Cathedral Park is one of the most photographed and most requested outdoor ceremony locations in Portland. Standing directly under the gothic arches of the St. Johns Bridge, surrounded by the Willamette River and 21 acres of park, it genuinely looks like something out of a movie. It is also free to visit, open to the public year-round, and about to become one of the most in-demand ceremony spots in the Pacific Northwest once the St. Johns Bridge repair project wraps up and the staircase reopens for permitted weddings in 2027.
I'm Kylie, the founder of Higher Love Event Co. I live and work in St. Johns. Cathedral Park is my backyard. Here is everything you need to know to get married here.
About Cathedral Park as a Cathedral Park wedding venue
Cathedral Park sits in the St. Johns neighborhood of North Portland, directly under the eastern end of the St. Johns Bridge. The bridge was designed by David B. Steinman and first opened in 1931. At 400 feet tall, it remains Portland's tallest bridge and the only suspension bridge in the Willamette Valley. The gothic arched towers give the park its name. Stand under them and you will immediately understand why couples keep coming back.
The park covers 21 acres along the riverfront and includes:
- The iconic stairs and deck under the bridge arches, the ceremony spot couples dream about
- A 500-person capacity amphitheater with a performance stage
- Riverfront access with a boat dock and beach area
- Paved accessible paths and accessible restrooms
- Picnic areas, an off-leash dog area, and a nature patch garden completed in 2024
The best light for photos is late afternoon or early evening before sunset. The park faces west, so golden hour hits beautifully. The bridge also provides partial rain cover, which makes Cathedral Park a more weather-resilient option than most outdoor ceremony spots in Portland.

What is happening right now: the Cathedral Park bridge repair project
Here is the part most couples do not know until they have already fallen for this spot.
Cathedral Park and the St. Johns Bridge · Portland, OR
The Cathedral Park staircase and deck, the iconic ceremony spot under the arches, has been unavailable for permitted weddings since October 2022. ODOT has been doing concrete repair work on the pier columns under the bridge, and the construction has kept the staircase off-limits for events. The amphitheater is still fully bookable, and small elopements of just the couple, officiant, and two witnesses are still allowed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The pier work is anticipated to be complete at the end of 2026, which means the staircase and deck are expected to reopen for permitted weddings in the 2027 booking cycle.
This is significant. There are four-plus years of pent-up demand for this spot. Couples who dreamed of getting married here and have been waiting are going to move quickly the moment permits are available. If you are planning a 2027 wedding at Cathedral Park, now is the time to start making moves.
Cathedral Park wedding permits: what to expect in 2027
The Cathedral Park staircase and deck · the ceremony spot couples have been waiting for
Portland Parks and Recreation opens wedding permit reservations in early January each year for that year's dates. For popular venues like Cathedral Park, it is a literal line-up event. Couples and their planners show up outside the Portland Building at 1120 SW 5th Ave before 8 AM on the first day of reservations to secure their date. Phone and online requests open the following day, but by then many Saturdays are already gone.
Key logistics to know:
- Permits must be requested at least 45 days in advance to avoid rush fees
- Pre-closure pricing for the staircase and deck was $621.50 for up to 100 guests (subject to change for 2027)
- A Z50 key and key deposit are required for electricity access, located about 150 feet from the ceremony space
- Portable restrooms are strongly recommended, as the park's permanent restrooms are lower in the park and not close to the stairs
- The staircase and deck are not ADA accessible
When January 2027 rolls around, I will be at the Portland Building with my couples on permit day. That is part of what it means to work with a St. Johns planner who knows this park.
What you can book for a Cathedral Park wedding right now

While the staircase permit situation resolves, you have two solid options at Cathedral Park today.
The Cathedral Park Amphitheater
The 500-person capacity amphitheater is fully available for permit reservations through PP&R. It is a beautiful option for larger ceremonies and gives you a genuine Cathedral Park wedding without waiting for the 2027 reopening. The amphitheater sits at the base of the bridge with the gothic arches as your backdrop, and it is ADA accessible.
An intimate Cathedral Park elopement
If your guest list is just the two of you, your officiant, and up to two witnesses, you can get married at Cathedral Park right now on a first-come, first-served basis with no permit required. This is how the Married Under the Bridge elopement package works, a tiered package I built in partnership with Weddinglandia, with Cathedral Park as the ceremony location and a styled picnic reception to follow. Weddinglandia serves as the rain backup venue, so the day is covered regardless of weather.
Planning a full Cathedral Park wedding in 2027
If you are eyeing the staircase for a full ceremony in 2027, here is what that planning process looks like with Higher Love.
My wedding packages are fixed in scope and published in price. You choose between a Ceremony and Reception or Reception Only package, and within that a tier based on your guest count: Petite up to 50 guests, Signature up to 90, Grand up to 120. Packages start at $4,500 for Ceremony and Reception. Every package includes venue research and logistics, all vendor vetting and contracts, a complete day-of timeline, and two professional coordinators onsite for up to 12 hours.
Decor is a required add-on, priced per table. You choose from one of eight pre-designed tablescape collections, each including full-length linens, runners, napkins, charger and dinner plates, flatware, water goblets, bud vase florals, votives, and taper or pillar candles, plus a matching digital suite of save-the-dates, invitations, wedding website, and signage. Setup, teardown, sourcing, and delivery are all included. No design fee.
Couples make a handful of guided decisions. I take it from there.
2027 waitlist: I am keeping a waitlist for Cathedral Park staircase weddings in 2027. If the staircase reopens as anticipated, I will be at the Portland Building on permit day with my couples. Reach out here if you would like to be on the list.
Why hire a local planner for your Cathedral Park wedding
Photo: Lindsay Blair Photography
I have said it before and I will keep saying it: there is no substitute for a planner who actually knows this park.
I live in St. Johns. Cathedral Park is two miles from my front door. I know where the electricity access is, how far the restrooms are from the staircase, where the light falls at 5 PM in October, and which local vendors know this setting well. I know the permit process not because I read about it but because I have been through it.
Getting married at Cathedral Park well, with logistics that actually work, decor that fits the setting, and a team that knows the ground, makes all the difference between a beautiful day and a stressful one.
